Media Release 21 March 2016
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of former Australian Champion Sire HUSSONET to a stroke this morning (21st March 2016).

Being born in 1991 he has had an amazing life… racing in the USA and standing at stud in South America, transferring to Arrowfield Stud in New South Wales in 2003, before spending the past five years at Cornerstone Stud in the Barossa Valley, South Australia.

HUSSONET’s tally of 30 Group One winners (and counting) is a truly amazing achievement. His legacy will continue through his daughters and sons at stud. His reputation as a top class broodmare sire is quickly gaining momentum.

The team at Cornerstone Stud we would like to thank shareholders and clients very much for their support of HUSSONET and the Stud over the past few years.

Whilst he has lived to a great age of twenty-five, it is always difficult saying goodbye to a legend who was so dear to all our hearts here at Cornerstone.

''We welcome visitors to call by the farm any time if you wish to pay your respects to a very special horse."

Pedigree Notes

As a highly proven Champion Sire of a myriad of stakeswinners HUSSONET has some very clear affinities which have become evident as his stud career has evolved. The most obvious of these is a strong genetic affinity with NIJINSKY. From 164 foals from Nijinsky-line mares HUSSONET has produced 23 SWs – a 14% SWs/foals ratio including 8 Gr1 winners including 3-time Gr1 winner Printemps.

Husson, Spontaneous (who also features Nijinsky’s ¾ brother THE MINSTREL) and Hush Money are another 3 Group 1 winners by HUSSONET to feature NIJINSKY in the pedigrees of their respective dams. Sources of Nijinsky in Australasia include REDOUTE’S CHOICE, ROYAL ACADEMY, QUEST FOR FAME, SUCCESS EXPRESS, SHOW A HEART, TALE OF THE CAT, SNITZEL, FASTNET ROCK, NOT A SINGLE DOUBT, HURRICANE SKY, UMATILLA, STRATUM and BEL ESPRIT.

USA Triple Crown Champion SEATTLE SLEW has also proven very compatible with HUSSONET from a limited opportunity. Mares from his sireline have produced the Gr1-winning Spontaneous while 3 other HUSSONET Gr1 winners - Shapira, River Café and Australian Horse of the Year Weekend Hussler - carry SEATTLE SLEW through their dams.

Not surprisingly DANEHILL-line mares have proved an excellent match for HUSSONET. Gr1 winner Reaan is out of daughter of DANEHILL while mares by sons of DANEHILL have been responsible for Gr1 winners Eagle Falls (DESERT KING mare) and Gold Trail (DANEWIN mare).

Duplicating HUSSONET’s sire MR. PROSPECTOR through the sireline of his mares has also proven successful. In particular broodmares from the FAPPIANO line have achieved excellent results with HUSSONET. Multiple Gr1 winners Husson, Host and National Park all boast FAPPIANO as their dam’s paternal grandsire. Sources of FAPPIANO include QUIET AMERICAN, DEFENSIVE PLAY and UNBRIDLED’S SONG. A colonial sireline that has clicked very nicely with HUSSONET is SNIPPETS. Remarkably from just four runners to date, three daughters of SNIPPETS have each produced a SW.

HUSSONET’s best Australian performer is the 7-time Gr1 winner Weekend Hussler whose dam is by a son of FAIRY KING in HELISSIO and is out of a granddaughter of AT TALAQ (by ROBERTO). These two lines are very contemporary influences available through the leading sires RED RANSOM (by ROBERTO) and ENCOSTA DE LAGO (by FAIRY KING).

HUSSONET traces to the famous taproot mare MAID OF MASHAM and mares loaded with MAID OF MASHAM lines which HUSSONET doesn’t carry are extremely compatible with HUSSONET. Tail-female sire descendants of MAID OF MASHAM which would satisfy this pattern when their daughters are matched with HUSSONET include GALILEO, DISTORTED HUMOR, DUBAWI and ALZAO.
